Choosing Chocolate...

Who doesn't love a little chocolate...in many different forms. My favorite is the rich, bitter-flavored chocolate, but I don't mind a Hershey's Milk-Chocolate kiss every now and then....oooh, and M & M's.
Could it be that chocolate is good for us? Oh, a dream come true! Research is now showing that one type of chocolate is rich not only in flavor, but also in antioxidants, which are great for our heart. Read entire article

Chocolate is made from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree. These seeds, also known as cocoa beans, are exceptionally rich in flavonoids, which are natural antioxidants thought to help protect against cardiovascular disease.

But not all chocolate is created equal. Processing destroys many of the natural flavonoids present in cocoa beans, and chocolate products that have been alkalized have been almost entirely depleted of their natural goodness. It's really only dark chocolate, high in cocoa content, that seems to be of benefit. Not white chocolate. Not milk chocolate. Only rich, dark chocolate.

Chocolate contains three primary fatty acids, one of which, oleic acid, is also found in olive oil. Research indicates that oleic acid, a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, may slightly reduce total cholesterol. The other two fats in chocolate, stearic acid and palmitic acid, are both saturated fats. In general, saturated fats, including palmitic acid, increase total cholesterol, which contributes to heart disease. Research shows, however, that unlike most saturated fats, stearic acid has no effect on cholesterol -- it doesn't reduce it, but it doesn't increase it, either.

Chocolate's Dark Side?
Before you ditch your bowl of fruit for a huge plate of brownies, let's do a quick reality check. A small portion of dark chocolate several times a week can be included as part of a healthy diet. But if you don't already eat chocolate, there's no legitimate health reason to start favoring it now. Not only is chocolate loaded with calories, but it also has far fewer health-boosting vitamins and minerals than fruits and vegetables. It also contains caffeine, something that should be minimized in some people's diets. And for some, chocolate may worsen premenstrual symptoms or trigger migraine headaches. Although research on the potential health benefits of chocolate reveals promising -- if surprising -- short-term results, the need for larger long-term trials still exists before we can truly determine the impact of chocolate consumption on cardiovascular health.

For a healthy heart, your best bet is to eat a balanced diet with lots of fruits and veggies, exercise regularly, and keep stress levels under control.

And every now and then, feel free to treat yourself to a guilt-free piece of rich, dark chocolate.

My sum of this article would be....moderation is key! Enjoy your dark chocolate, but don't go overboard!

My problem is I don't like dark chocolate:-) I like white and milk, yummy. But on the up side, I am not a big sweets fan. I don't get the carving very much.

I had a question for Jaime. If you could share your advice on how you started incorporating fruits/veggies into your diet more. And where you bought them mid winter. Thanks!!

Hi, girls!

Tawnya- I am actually not a big sweet eater, either! I do love dark chocolate, though!

Mom- I am so glad to see that you signed up! Woo hoo!

Erin- I signed up for the Love Dare! I love running with you in the morning...wow, it makes exercising so much more fun!

Amy- It was such a miracle running into you today...the events were going disastrous up until that point! Praise the Lord!

Lori- Have a blast this weekend!

Tawnya-
The indoor flea market on South Avenue usually has winter vegetables. It is a good place to support the local business. There is also a great deli if you like cheese. They really appreciate our business! :)

Tawnya,
As for finding the fruits and veggies... I don't have any particular trick and admittedly most of them are canned. I eat oranges or bananas but...hahah...I love the canned tropical fruit and mandarin oranges from Aldi :) I had some this morning actually...

I agree with Heather's suggestion of the flea market as a good one if you are looking for fresh produce grown close to home :)

And...although it need not be mentioned...I am a fan of the dark chocolate :)

Thanks Jamie and Heather.

Heather do you know the hours of the flea market? I don't get to Boardman too much. Is that the place by the jewelry place?

It's 9:00am-4:00pm Saturdays and Sundays. Yes, it is by the jewelry place! I am looking forward to the wonderful fruit out at Roger's Flea Market this summer! Yum!

Hi all. Four Seasons Flea Market in Campbell is still open on Wednesdays and Sundays. I think 8-4 Sams Club has good fruit although its not always cheap.
Heather seeing you was a nice break in my day. I just got your email about next Friday. I should be there.
Back to the fruit thing, apples, oranges, and bananas are always good for me and found at all grocery stores pretty much year round.

I really likee chocolate and that plate of brownies sounds great. I'm glad I don't have any to make as we're all snowed in today. The snow is absolutely beautiful but be careful if you have to go out in to it.
