Getting Started....Health Challenge Week 1

Here are some tips to help make the next four weeks a success....

1. Exercise 30 minutes a day
If you're just starting out, get walking! If you joined the 2008 weight loss challenge and have already lost some weight, you may need to step up the intensity of the exercie, but you don't need to exercise longer. Change up your routine a bit and you'll see better results! For those of you who are ready to tone, try lifting light weights...more on weight lifting to come!

2. Discover how many calories you need and stick to it
If you eat more, do something to offset like eating a lighter meal later on....but, don't skip meals!
3. Plan your meals
Buy a notebook and write down what you plan on eating this week and then stick to it. Why? Because in the "heat of the moment" temptation will take over. If you have no doubt what you're going to eat and it is easily accessible, then saying yes to temptation isn't an option. You can adjust your eating schedule daily, but do it when you're NOT famished.
4. Get a buddy
Find someone whom you can talk to about your weight loss struggles(preferably someone doing the challenge.) If you'd prefer to write about it on the blog, great! Just find someone who will hold you accountable and NOT try and tempt you back into old habits.

5. Strive to eat foods which will not spike your blood sugars
Simple carbs and sugars will leave you feeling dissatisfied & hungrier than before. Some options of complex carbs are: 100% Whole Wheat Bread, Brown Rice, Fiber-filled food, Peanut Butter, etc.
Remember: Wednesday= Weigh-In

Thanks for the great suggestions today Heather! I hope everyone has a great day and sticks to their plan. I started out with great intentions; jumped on the scale this morning, and I'm 2 lbs. heavier than I was when I signed up--bummer! So I went to the Y and ran, and then ran into someone's car in the parking lot. It's going to get easier, right?!
Thanks for letting me vent, ladies. Have a terrific day!

Oh, Erin, I am so sorry to hear all of that. I can't believe you didn't mention it in your e-mail! Is everything okay?

Girls, I prayed for each one of you this morning. I hope the week and day has gotten off to a great start.

Amy, I have been praying for your day back to work. I hope that it was easier than you thought it would be! I love you, girl!

Elaine- Did you enjoy your first day at the Y? I am so excited Jaime got you a membership!

Lynne- I am so glad that you joined the challenge! How is this week starting out for you?

Lori- How was your night's sleep?

Jaime- Miss you already! Thank you for the e-card! You're great!

Missy- How has the week started off? Did you sign Jake up for Preschool?

Erin- Missed running with you this morning, but I did make it out to run this morning. Not nearly as easy as when i have someone to talk to! I didn't get on the scale this morning because I was feeling a bit larger today.

Hey ladies,

Well my first day went well. I got my exercise in and ate well so i feel pretty good about the start.
I didnt sign up for preschool but i am thinking about it tomorrow. Hopefully there are still some spaces. I am really not sure what to do with him next year but I think I will sign him up so that he has a spot.

Hope all is well with everyone. Heather thanks for the prayers..Love you all. Erin- I am so sorry about the car, that is such a bad feeling...

The Y was just great! I walked on the treadmill for 30 min. @ 2.5 mph, and then I was on this other piece of equipment that was like a stair stepper/eliptical thing for 30 min. (but you're sitting down). This way there is less stress on my knees. I felt great and I can't wait to go tomorrow. I'm had 3 nice meals today...so over all I feel pretty good for the 1st day.

Well, I ran up and down the flights of stairs today unloading my car and preparing for the movers survey...so... I suppose i got in some exercise. I was actually just thinking about how my legs were stiff..but I guess sitting in the car yesterday and all the stairs today would do it!
I also ate very smartly...though not items of my choice. My stomach has been feeling off the last couple days, but a friend was super nice, helped me return my rental car and invited me to her home for dinner. She didn't mention she made spinach salad and chili...not super great for a rumbly stomach...but it was yummy and I survived.

I was so glad to see that everyone had successes today...big and small. I'm so glad the Y went well Mom! Go you!!

Thank you for praying for all of us Heather and I hope volleyball was fun :)

Blessings to everyone!! :)

I survived my first day back to work! Work is work but I missed my baby and missed waiting on Derek to get home. I missed my afternoon nap too :) It wasn't a terrible day and it really helped that I left Haley with Kathryn whom I really trust and know will take great care of my baby. She gets to hang out with Grandpa tomorrow. It'll be a huge adjustment not having as much time with her but that smile when I pick her up is a great reward for my hard day of work.
OK thanks for listening, reading :), now for challenge stuff I ate really good today even had 2 bananas. I am sitting here at about 10:30pm debating on going downstairs to get on the eliptical. I don't know if I'll get there tonight I'm pretty tired but I won't feel so bad if I don't.
Sounds like everyone is off and running! Lets keep going!!
