Need An Energy Boost?

Do you ever find yourself slumping down into the chair after work, unable to move another muscle because of fatigue? Do you find yourself constantly yawning and dozing off during the day? If so, here are some great energy tips from Dr. Oz...click to read entire article

Power Up
Meet the true nutritional heroes of the last decade: DHA and ribose. DHA is the active form of omega-3 that helps constitute nerve membranes and keeps the nerves to your muscles firing, as well as helps encase muscles. You can get DHA in fish oils or from the algae that fish eat. Try getting 600 mg of DHA a day, which is equivalent to 2 grams of fish oil if you like that taste better.

Move More to Move More
One of the best ways to increase your energy is to jump-start it with some physical activity such as walking. Doing that brings in more nutrients since nitric oxide is released from the linings of arteries to allow blood vessels to move blood more freely. One of the greatest things about your body is that it responds to what you're doing through mechanisms called feedback loops. You tell your body that you want to watch reruns all night, and it responds by downshifting energy production. But tell your body that you need to walk around the neighborhood or swim a few laps or do an early-morning stretch-to-the-ceiling routine, and it responds by giving you the energy you need.Take advantage of these feedback loops by integrating more exercise into your routine. And start early in the day, when you have the energy to exercise. Ideally, aim for 45 minutes a day of physical activity with at least 20 minutes a day involving the sore muscles.Start by doing gentle exercise such as walking or warm-water stretching. The trick is to do only the amount or intensity that makes you feel "good tired," not "bad tired" or in pain afterward. Tell your body which way to go, and it's going to follow.

Sleep Eight
Blame it on the invention of electricity, more demanding jobs or great late-night TV, but we sleep a whole lot less nowadays than we used to. On average, Americans awake at 5:47 a.m. and do not hit the bed (not when we actually sleep) until after 10:15 p.m. That, simply, is not enough. Why not? Sleep has the ultimate restorative powers and you need it for your hormonal balance and for increasing the rejuvenating human growth hormone, which is needed to choreograph the looking and feeling beautiful dance in your body. Growth hormone is secreted primarily when we sleep and is dependent on your sleep. We're just not doing enough of it. Eight high-quality hours a day will help you restore energy, decrease pain and lose weight. If you have trouble falling asleep, you may need to include some sleep tactics in your bag of bedroom tricks

Check Your Plate
When it comes to increasing energy, food is still nature's best medicine. Try these dietary tactics:
Drink Up
One hidden cause of fatigue is a little bit of dehydration. It's something that many people can't quite identify, so if you're feeling a little low, a glass of water may be the jolt you really need. Drink as much water as it takes to keep your mouth and lips moist throughout the day, so that your urine is clear enough to read through. If you have chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia and have low blood pressure, you can increase your salt intake—especially sea salt, for minerals—when your body craves it.
Avoid simple sugars.
These end in "-ose" like glucose, sucrose, maltose or dextrose—but not ribose. You should also avoid syrups, any grain that isn't "100-percent whole grain" and saturated and trans fats.
Aim to consume a diet of high-quality protein from nuts and fish, and cut down on carbs. And include lots of fruits, vegetables and 100-percent whole grains.

Get Rid of Infections
While most of us want to treat infections because of their acute symptoms, we can't ignore that they can have chronic implications as well. Since inflammation and infection can be two of the dominoes in the cascade of low-energy symptoms, one of your goals could be to monitor your body so that infections don't linger.

This means:
1. Regular flossing to decrease the risk of gum inflammation.
2. Probiotics to treat such infections as prostatitis, bowel infections and vaginitis.

Many infections are viral. This means good sleep, frequent hand washing and good food choices that avoid all simple sugars and saturated fats can help.

Go B
You need B vitamins for your mitochondria to produce energy from glucose. Most of us absorb the B vitamins well in either liquid or pill form, but 99 percent of us don't get enough from our diets.Take a multivitamin in the morning and evening (twice a day to keep stable levels, since we pee the water-soluble ones out) to keep you energized. If you're having symptoms, check your vitamin B12 and D levels.Get your vitamin B and D levels checked yearly. You may be the rare person who doesn't absorb them well from your stomach and intestine and needs a B12 vitamin injection yearly.Much of the world is short of vitamin D—and you need it to help fight cancer, to keep arteries young and to aid brain function. So make sure you get it measured and take what is needed to keep its level normal.

Go Green
Green tea has been shown to have the highest content of polyphenols, which are chemicals with potent antioxidant properties believed to be greater than even vitamin C's. They give tea its bitter flavor. Because green tea leaves are young and have not been oxidized, green tea has up to 40 percent polyphenols, while black tea contains only about 10 percent.Another interesting note: Green tea has one-third the caffeine of black tea. Even better, it's been shown to yield the same level of energy and attentiveness, but in more even levels than the ups and downs associated with other caffeinated drinks. Just don't drink milk with it; the casein in milk has been shown to inhibit the beneficial effects of tea.

Thanks for the info Heather. I have a question and a tip:-) I don't like fish, at all, yuck. So I have been trying to find something that has Omega 3 Oils in it. Well I found milled flax seed. You can get it at any grocery store. It has 2600 mg of Omega 3-Oils per serving. It also has fiber, no salt, no sugar, no cholesterol, and is gluten free. I just sprinkle some in a lot of my recipes. You can't even tell its there.

My question. I am a biggest loser fan. On the last season Bob told one of the players to start drinking coffee that it was good for him. I have never drank straight coffee, so I was wondering if a cup a day is good or not.

Also, I blame my lack of 8 hours of sleep on my 9 month old son:-)

I love Flaxseed. So does Isaiah. I used to put Flax Seed Oil in his bottles, too! I read in Super Baby Food to get them started early on it. I put it in his yogurt in the morning, along with Natural Peanut Butter and Avocado and anything else I decide to add, bananas or pureed oranges. Also, I add it to our whole wheat bread. It is great, Tawnya! Keep eating it!

Yes, a cup a day of coffee is supposed to be good, because it is full of antioxidants. I personally LOVE coffee. The Real Age docs reccommend a cup of coffee a day....Here is what they say, "So there is give and take with coffee. If you don't already drink it, the recent news about antioxidants is not necessarily a reason to pick up the habit. And for people who already drink it, it's no excuse to stop eating fruits and veggies. Finally, because of the caffeine content, moderation is still the key to enjoying it healthfully. Your best bet is to eat your fruits and veggies, and try to limit yourself to about one or two small cups—about 8-ounces—of coffee per day. That way you stay within the recommended limit of no more than 250 milligrams of caffeine per day."

I hope this helps!

Thanks Heather!! I still don't know if I want to start the habit though. I never heard of flax see in bottles. How early did you start doing that?

The author references Dr. Leo Galland's book, SuperImmunity for Kids, and he suggested adding a tsp. a day to the formula bottle. Or you can rub it on his skin so that it will get absorbed through his body.

The book, Super baby Food, is a GREAT reference for everything to feed your child...and really yourself!! She has some great ideas!!

What great info. I really enjoyed reading it.

Regarding Fish Oil - I take 2 Omega3 Fish Oil gel caps each day. Each one had 300mg of DHA. Tawnya, they are tasteless, so they might work for you. I get them at Sam's Club

Heather, I recall from another article you posted that potassium was important. I can't do bananas so I tried apricots. I love them! They are so sweet and tasty. I buy them in 70 calorie packs & each pack has 290mg of potassium, 0mg of Cholesterol, 0 grams of trans fat & 2 grams of fiber. They make a great, healthy snack in the afternoon.

Blessings

Do the flavored green teas work too?
Tawnya-Heather and I can relate to the lack of sleep from our precious little ones. My Haley is 3 months old and not yet sleeping through the night. Those 4am, or whenever she decides, feedings can really interrupt some sleep but I can't think of a better reason to get up.

Amy, I know, I whine sometimes, but not too much. I am blessed to be able to be home so I can take a short nap sometimes during the day. Truly, when Eric takes a night, I really miss holding him and feeding him the still of the night (boys 2 men anyone). He is going to be 9 months thursday and it has gone by so fast. I just want him to be a baby:-)

Amy- Yes, flavored teas work, too, but WATCH OUT for sugars. Try and stay away from High Fructose Corn Syrup, which will really spike your blood sugars. When your blood sugar spikes super high and does this often, it causes inflammation in your body. Which, as you know, causes a whole other set of problems! :) Sorry, probably more info than you wanted!!

Hey, do you think we could get our husbands to do the challenge with us? What if the reward was a free hour-long massage? I know Nate would do it if other men would. He actually told me he would get on if I wanted him to. I may have my Dad log on and post how he lost 70 pounds, which would connect with the men. Just a thought for lap two....

Tawnya-You are very right it goes really fast.
Heather I think Josh may be interested in the challenge but not the massage. I could take it if he won :)

Oh and Heather I appreciate the info. What does that flax seed stuff look like? Does it have a taste?

Anonymous said...

Ok Heather, I thought I posted this, maybe I did it under a different topic. What are you looking for in hubbys? Eric works a very manual job and he is skinny so he doesn't really need to exercise or lose weight. Since my goal is to eat healthier and I buy the groceries and cook them he has no choice.

Amy, I have not tasted the flax seed in anything I put it in. Its milled so it is basically one stop up from powder. I would look in the baking, sugar, flour area of your grocery store

Amy- I find it in the organic section of Giant Eagle. You can also buy the Flax Seed oil in the Organic section.

Tawnya- Nate has said numerous times that he has put on thirty pounds since getting married, he just doesn't work out as much. Of course, I still think he is incredibly good looking. Amy's Josh mentioned to me that he wants to lose weight. I just thought that if they joined the competition together, they'd enjoy it. Probably, they just need to play a few pick-up basketball games together and they'd lose the weight they want to lose! :) They may not need the outside support that I so heartily enjoy!

Ohhh if we are talking bout basketball, better watch out, my hubby is pretty good!!

Mine can still play too :) His cousin actually owns a gym, the old Ytown college of massotherapy and can probably get a good deal on renting it. Its funny how we become their social secretaties :)
